How we spend your money
The NHS is funded by the taxes you pay. In 2008/09 NHS Kirklees had approximately £575 million to make sure every resident could get the healthcare they needed. That's roughly £1,413 per person. Almost £400 million of that grand total will be used to pay for hospital treatment for local people.
We receive two types of financial allocations from the Department of Health to enable us to carry out our functions. This includes revenue to pay for day to day services, and capital to buy equipment and improve buildings. We must make sure that our spending does not exceed either of these allocations and last year we achieved a small underspend against both revenue and capital allocations.
Our revenue allocation
In the year 2007/08 we achieved a surplus of £4.4 million against its revenue allocation. This represented only 0.8% of our total allocation and will be carried forward into 2008/09 for the benefit of Kirklees residents.
Last financial year we spent £529 million on services for the local population, maintaining existing services but also improving the quality of services, reducing waiting times and introducing new services.
Our capital allocation
We invested over £1 million worth of our capital allocation last year including more than £250,000 on information technology in GP surgeries and community health centres, and making available nearly £500,000 for improvements in dental practices.
Looking to the future
We were allocated £29 million of new revenue money this financial year and plan to spend this by continuing to improve waiting times, continuing to provide services closer to people's homes, continuing to extend services for people with continuing care needs, and making significant investment in services to improve the care of people with long term conditions.
We're also making further significant investments in addressing health inequalities in Kirklees, targeting our resources where we have identified the greatest need. We're spending over £2 million providing a superb new ward environment for patients at Holme Valley Memorial Hospital and improving the infrastructure to enable more services to be provided there.
