First six pharmacies in Kirklees sign up to lifestyle initiative

Free services to help people live healthier lifestyles will be available at six pharmacies in Kirklees which have become Healthy Living Pharmacies (HLP) in a new NHS initiative.

Local people will be able to call in at their local Healthy Living Pharmacy for services such as emergency contraception, a stop smoking scheme or a medicine use review – often not even needing to book an appointment in advance.

The whole pharmacy team plays an important part in the Healthy Living Pharmacy initiative.  All staff have been trained to be “Health Champions” in a programme recognised by the Royal Society of Public Health which means they can give advice on a range of health issues.

Robbie Turner, Chief Executive of Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire said: “All pharmacies provide valuable health services but with Healthy Living Pharmacies, healthy living and wellbeing is a core activity. Pharmacies are delighted to be able to support their local communities to help them lead healthy lives. We know that people like the accessibility of their local pharmacy and the fact that they do not always have to book an appointment.”

A Healthy Living Pharmacy offers the same range of services as all pharmacies but with additional facilities and a commitment to improving health and wellbeing by helping people to live healthier lifestyles.

What can you expect from Kirklees’ healthy living pharmacies?

• A wide range of health services
• Welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable staff
• Private rooms for discussing personal issues
• Up-to-date technology to ensure you get the best possible treatment
• Your local NHS working together for you
• Information on keeping well and healthy
The initiative is being co-ordinated by Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire with strong support from NHS Kirklees.

Dr Judith Hooper. Director of Public Health for NHS Kirklees and Council said: "The Healthy Living Pharmacy approach aims to make it easier for people to get advice and information on staying healthy. As the pharmacies are in the heart of communities the staff at each one can advise people on services and support available locally."
