What are respiratory problems?

Respiration is the process of breathing in and out through the respiratory system which consists of parts of your body such as lungs, airways, throat and mouth. Lungs are a major part of this respiratory system as they bring oxygen into our bodies. This oxygen then travels through the bloodstream to the cells in all parts of our body.
There are many diseases that can affect this system which include asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
How can I manage my respiratory problems?
Lots of things can be done to help reduce the side effects and symptoms of your respiratory disease.
These include:

  • Staying active - inactivity can lead to muscle wasting and weakening of the heart. Daily activity can help your body function more effectively
  • Ask your GP where your nearest Pulmonary Rehabilitation class is operating
  • Watching your diet - your body needs food to provide it with energy. Due to your respiratory problem extra energy is required. It is important to eat a healthy variety of food to help your body function at its best
  • Taking time to relax - fatigue and tension can contribute to shortness of breath so take time each day to relax, both physically and mentally
  • Medication - write down the doses you are supposed to take and the times you need to take them
  • Join a support group and meet other people living with a respiratory illness - such as 'Breathe Easy' group sponsored by the British Lung Foundation
  • Visit the British Lung Foundation website to find out more.
