Acting early

Early booking

Did you know that you can book to see a midwife as soon as you find out you're pregnant, without needing to see your GP first?

Booking in early with your midwife will allow you to receive information, advice and support and give you more time to build up a relationship with them.

What supplements should you take?

If you're pregnant and haven't started to take folic acid tablets yet, your baby can still benefit from you taking these tablets up until 12 weeks of your pregnancy, so start today! Taking folic acid tablets (400 micrograms per day) can reduce the chance of your baby having spina bifida or neural tube defects – affecting the way in which your baby’s spinal cord is formed.

Taking vitamin D tablets (10 micrograms per day) is also a good idea throughout pregnancy, but avoid any multivitamins, as these may contain vitamin A which can harm your baby if you take too much.

You may be eligible to get free vitamins from the Healthy Start scheme. Talk to your midwife for more details or check out the healthy start website.
