The Dewsbury Feeding and Swallowing Screen

The Screen

  • Is an observational screening tool for nurses to identify feeding and swallowing problems in all patients in both hospital and community settings
  • Is a systematic and comprehensive checklist assessing both food and drink
  •  Provides a quick identification of the problem with a clear indication when referral to Speech and Language Therapy, for assessment and treatment, is necessary – all of which results in reducing the risk to the patient.
  • Is simple, flexible and quick to administer – only takes 10 -15 minutes
  • Can be used by nurses and other professionals with little or no previous experience of dysphagia

The Training Package comprises

  • A main manual containing information on dysphagia including causes and risk factors, administration details and a description of each test item – what to look out for
  • A DVD depicting 12 normal and abnormal swallows ranging from mild to severe difficulties
  • A second manual containing 12 completed screening forms relating to the swallows shown on the DVD

The manuals and DVD have been designed for training in how to use the screen and also to check competence.
