Complex needs

Welcome

We are a team of speech and language therapists working with people of all ages who have complex needs. These could be due to learning disabilities, autism, complex physical and sensory disabilities, or any combination of these.

We are highly skilled in working with people who have difficulty communicating, and with those who have difficulty eating and drinking.  We offer assessment, advice and support, training, and therapy to meet the needs of the individual.

Speech and language therapists usually work alongside other professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This team can include nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, dietitians and doctors, as well as other staff members.

Children and adults with eating and drinking difficulties

Some people might experience difficulties with eating and / or drinking. This can be due to problems with biting, chewing, or swallowing.

The speech and language therapist will be able to help by watching the person eat / drink, talking to family members and assessing the person’s ability to eat and drink safely.

After assessment the speech and language therapist can give advice on:

  • The most appropriate position for eating and drinking
  • The texture of food / drink offered
  • The most appropriate utensils e.g. spoons, cups etc.
  • The speed at which food is offered

Sometimes additional information might be needed. The person will be asked to take part in further investigations or assessments. In addition, it might be necessary to refer to another professional (e.g. a dietitian or physiotherapist). Click below for the relevent leaflet.
