Smoking and pregnancy
When you inhale smoke you are putting over 4,000 chemicals into your body. Two of the main components are tar and carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas. Carbon monoxide gets into your bloodstream and cuts down the oxygen reaching your baby. Babies who don’t get enough oxygen can be born smaller and weaker. Oxygen helps babies grow. The good news is that stopping smoking will benefit your baby immediately.
We have specialist advisors to help you stop smoking if you are pregnant.
For support if you are pregnant and live in Huddersfield call 01484 347101. if you live in Dewsbury, Batley or Spen call 01924 351498.
Smokefree homes project
In the smokefree homes project, parents can commit to one of three promises:
- Gold – To promise to make the house totally smoke free at all times
- Silver - To promise to limit smoking to one well-ventilated room and never to smoke in the presence of children
- Bronze – To promise to never smoke in the presence of children
Further details providing advice can be found by clicking here
Research shows that children from a smokefree home are less likely to have persistent coughs, middle ear infections and be admitted to hospital with exacerbations of asthma and chest infections.
Studies show that 42% of children in the UK live in a smokey home, which can have a significant effect on their health. Nationally over 17,000 children in the UK are admitted to hospital each year due to conditions that are triggered by second hand smoke.
Liberate the workplace
- Secondhand smoke kills three times more workers than industrial accidents
- Burning tobacco releases 4000 chemicals into the air; 100 are poisons and 50 cause cancer
- Smoking costs businesses in our region around £1billion a year
The Kirklees Stop Smoking Services can offer support and guidance to local businesses wanting to implement smokefree policies, and can also offer stop smoking groups in the workplace dedicated to employees wanting support to stop.
Stop before your op
If you are waiting for an operation then it’s very important that you stop smoking as soon as possible. Smoking greatly increases the risk of complications during and after surgery. Some operations aren’t even an option for smokers.
- Smokers are far more likely to have anaesthesia related complications, e.g. chest infections
- Smoking can delay your recovery, the wounds are slower to heal and more likely to develop infection
